Biological Active Ingredients
In Immungard™ seven mushrooms have been used with a long tradition of use and scientific research in particularly the Orient. Several hundreds of individual compounds have been isolated in these mushrooms, including a number of familiar compounds like vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The protein content of mushrooms usually varies from 10 to 40% dry weight. Remarkably these mushrooms contain ALL essential amino acids and nearly all non-essential amino acids, as well as nearly all vitamins, minerals and trace elements. As an example, the vitamin B2 content usually varies from 1,8 to 5,1 mg/100 gram dry weight, and the content of vitamin B3 and folic acid between 31-65 resp. 0,36-0,64 mg/100 g dw 1.
Such high levels of vitamins, minerals and amino acids give mushrooms an outstanding nutritional value. On top of this support health, of other ingredients the biological effect is not clear yet. New and promising compounds are still being discovered and published. Below a summary of the ingredients used in the seven mushrooms of ImmunGard™:
• proteins, peptides, cyclic dipeptides
• ALL essential amino acids (!)
• most of the non-essential amino acids
• unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA’s)
• minerals and trace elements
• enzymes (more than 200 known)
• polysaccharides, including beta (1,3), (1,4), (1,6) glucans, hetero-beta-glucans and proteoglycans (protein-polysaccharid complexes)
• triterpenes (more than 100 known)
• steroids, including ergosterol (provitamin D2)
The importance of Organic Culture: EU Organic Certification
Mushrooms are capable of absorbing almost all ingredients form the substrate they grow on, including those that might be harmful to health. Mushrooms that are grown in a polluted environment may be able to concentrate harmful substances to even toxic levels. Thus, mushrooms have a tendency to reflect the environment they grow in. For this reason no ‘wild’ mushrooms from uncontrolled regions in uncontrolled countries have been used in Kala Health products.
All mushrooms in ImmunGard™ are guaranteed to come from an EU-certified organic farm. Raw mushrooms are largely indigestible due to their sturdy cell walls, which mainly consist of chitin. The cell walls provide structure to the mushroom, but also make the biologically active nutrients inaccessible. It is therefore important to always cook mushrooms for several hours before use, so that the nutrients are released and can be absorbed by the body.
After harvest, the mushrooms in ImmunGard are extracted 1:1 with hot water, which breaks down the chitin cell walls and releases the nutrients. This means that all biologically active components of the mushrooms can actually be absorbed by the body.
For the EU, the ImmunGard™ product has been awarded the SKAL Organic Certificate.
