Green Lipped Mussel Oil
Research has revealed greenlipped mussel oil is not only a rich source of the well-known fatty acids EPA and DHA, but also contains a few other, rare omega-3 fatty acids ánd a newly discovered group of fatty acids, the so-called Furtan Fatty Acids. These fatty acids are found exclusively in algae living in the cold, deep, salt, pristine coastal waters of New Zealand. Mussels inhabiting these waters filter out the algae, and store their fatty acids. The newly discovered omega-3 fatty acids and furan fatty acids, are the secret behind the biological activity of greenlipped mussel oil.

GlycOmega® is a stabilized fatty acid extract of the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Perna canaliculus, obtained by cold CO2-extraction. Stabilization is essential tp prevent early oxidation of in particular the extremely unstable furan fatty acids, preserving the biologoical activity of the Green Lipped Mussel Oil.

UNIQUE FATTY ACID PROFILE
Recent research has shown greenlipped mussel oil is not only a rich source of the well-known fatty acids EPA and DHA, but also contains a few rare, other omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are found only in the algae living in the cold, deep, salty and pristine coastal waters of New Sealand. The mussels living in these waters feed on the algae by filtering the water, and store the fatty acids.

The newly discovered fatty acids make the oil derived from greenlipped mussels much more complete the other oils, including fish oil. One consequence is, you would need much less of this oil compared to fish oil.

FURAN FATTY ACIDS
For decades there have been strong indications, New Zealand Green Lipped Mussels contain one or more extremely effective but instable ingredients, that disappear without stabilization during the first step of the production process. Omega-3 fatty acids were not a candidate of first choice, since these fatty acids remain present in e.g. fish oil without stabilization. Recent research brought a new group of fatty acids to the light, the so-called Furan Fatty Acids. These fatty acids combine extreme biological efficacy with extreme instability, reason why they have not been discovered before. Nowadays, Furan Fatty Acids are generally considered one of the unique ingredients of the Green Lipped Mussel, that contribute to the biological activity.

NEWLY DISCOVERED FATTY ACID IS NOT ETA!
The discovery of the new fatty acid (C20:4n-3) in greenlipped mussel oil has created an 'hype'. Some distributors try to make an easy profit by claiming the amount of ETA in their product. However, the fatty acid ETA is completely different from the newly discovered fatty acid in greenlipped mussel oil. The only similarity is, both fattty acids are built of twenty carbon atoms. However, the double bonds between the carbon atoms are on different locations, giving both fatty acids a completely different biological activity.

NO PROTEINS
Aspitol® Plus only contains the stabilized oil, and is (almost) free of shell fish proteins.

WHY IS GREEN-LIPPED MUSSEL OIL SUPERIOR TO GREEN-LIPPED MUSSEL POWDER?

Green-lipped mussel is also offered as dried powder. This powder is sold in capsules or as loose powder in small bottles. However, it still is not possible to stabilize omega-3 fatty acids and furan fatty acids in powder form for a longer period. That is why omega-3 fatty acids in powder form easily oxidate, loose their biological activity and even become toxic. This is the reason why green-lipped mussel powder starts to smell rancid when exposed to air.

Another disadvantage of green-lipped mussel powder is, it contains the mussel proteins which may cause allergic reactions for those with a shellfish intolerance.

And last but least: the amount of green-lipped mussel oil produced is growing by the year, and so is the amount of powder the oil has been extracted from. This powder is a waste product with hardly any biological activity, as it contains hardly any omega-3 fatty acids. Yet, this powder is not destroyed but sold as green-lipped mussel powder for lower prices!. Many actually think this powder is of superior quality as -due to the absence of oxidating fatty acids- is does not smell as bad as green-lipped powder that still contains the fat fraction!

The advantages of green-lipped mussel oil can be summarized as follows:

• The omega-3 fatty acids and furan fatty acids in green-lipped mussel oil are the biological most active compounds;
• Green-lipped mussel oil can easily be stabilized and is of consistent high quality;
• Green-lipped mussel oil hardly contains any proteins and may well be tolerated by people with a shellfish intolerance;
• Green-lipped mussel oil is salt free and can be used well in a low salt diet;
• GLMO is a natural ingredient without any side effects, even safe for children.
